Sir, it seems something got into the system...
The Taken are monsters created from humans touched by the infection. They are robbed of their human nature, form and limitations. They gain incredible powers, as well as a desire to destroy as much as possible. They can be separated into two groups; the Major and Minor Taken. Few Major Taken have much in common, but current studies see to show they have some similarities.
- All of them are capable of speech to some degree
- All of them share the ability to turn others into Minor Taken
- All the transformations begin with a nose bleed
These are the monsters most feared, the creatures of nightmares. They delight in havoc and chaos, satisfying a deep primal urge they had when they were human. Disinfecting a Major Taken is a complicated endeavour, but it is fully possible. Certain objects hold power to wipe the infection away. Without one of these, it is still possible to inflict enough damage to cause he corruption to collapse upon itself.
The Minor Taken are more akin to zombies; their heads are covered by a dark black and purple could. They serve the Major Taken unquestioningly. They are weak, and easy to defeat, which is why they appear in swarms, hoping to use their numbers to overwhelm an opponent. They lack the cognitive ability to plan ahead, and normally just run towards a target and claw away until they are told to stop, or hit the ground. Disinfecting a Minor Taken is an easier feat, simply dispel the cloud around their head.
Avoiding being Taken is no simple task, and many suspect the White Spire holds the key. Tonics and potions are commonly found being sold, though few are effective. Some people have been heard of using sheer willpower to avoid becoming a Minor Taken, but no one as of yet has avoided becoming a Major, although certain medications have slowed the transformation.
All Taken who are returned to human form have a chance of keeping a remnant of the power they wielded when changed. More often than not this comes with a price, but some find the exchange worthwhile.
